چکیده

This paper presents a technique for identification of solid materials by localized microwaves. A small hotspot (~1-mm) created by thermal-runaway instability on the material surface is further radiated by the localized microwaves hence ejecting a plasma plume. Its atomic emission spectrum is detected and analyzed by an optical spectrometer for element identification, as in the known laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique. The conceptual feasibility of the microwave-induced breakdown spectroscopy (MIBS) as a low-cost substitute for the LIBS is demonstrated by experimental results. The proposed MIBS technique for material identification might be preferable in scenarios that permit direct contact with the identified material and its slight destruction.

The effect of self-absorption correction using internal reference on determining heavy metals concentration by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

The identification and concentration of heavy metals, which may be so harmful for the body, is determined by the method of calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy using a special strategy. First, the plasma temperature is obtained using the Boltzmann plot. Then, a line with an inappreciable self-absorption is considered for each element as the reference. The modified intensities o...

Breakdown Spectroscopy Induced by Localized Microwaves for Material Identification

This letter introduces a localized microwave technique for direct excitation of solid materials for the sake of their identification by atomic emission spectroscopy. The microwave energy is concentrated on the material surface by a microwave-drill type applicator. The evolved 1-mm hotspot is slightly evaporated and excited as plasma. An optical spectrometer measures the atomic emission spectrum...

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy: a tool for real-time, in vitro and in vivo identification of carious teeth

BACKGROUND: Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) can be used to measure trace element concentrations in solids, liquids and gases, with spatial resolution and absolute quantifaction being feasible, down to parts-per-million concentration levels. Some applications of LIBS do not necessarily require exact, quantitative measurements. These include applications in dentistry, which are of a m...

Atomic Hydrogen and Molecular Carbon Emissions in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

This article addresses hydrogen Balmer series measurements following laser-induced optical breakdown. Electron density on the order of 1 × 10 m−3 can be inferred using Hα Stark width and shift for plasma generated in 1 to 1.3 × 10 Pa, gaseous hydrogen. The Hβ line can be utilized for electron density up to 7 × 10 m−3. Laser ablation of aluminium reveals limits of application of the Balmer serie...
